Audra McDonald's talents are unmatched in the range and variety of her work in her roles as a performer, singer and performer. In 2015, she won a record breaking six Tony Awards as well as two Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards. She was also named as a result of Time magazine among the 100 most influential people and was received an award called the National Medal of Arts - the highest prize in America for excellence in art by the president Barack Obama. Born into a musical family McDonald grew up living in Fresno California and received her classical training in New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, just a few years after her Juilliard School, McDonald was awarded the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a musical" for Carousel. The following four years she won another two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. These were in recognition of her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. She won her 4th Tony for her role in the musical she played alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. When she was in 2012, she was a leading actress on stage in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she won the fifth Tony and won the first prize in the lead actor category. In her role as the Tony Awards' most decorated performer, she was able to set Broadway history when she was awarded her sixth Tony Award for portraying Billie Holiday as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. This performance also served as the basis for her Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. The first actor to be awarded in four different category of acting, McDonald broke the record for the number of awards an actor has won. Her credits in the theatre are The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night marked McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. The Peabody Award-winning CBS program Having Our Say The Delany Sisters First 100 Years that initially introduced McDonald viewers to her talents as a dramatic actress. The actress then starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the critically acclaimed 1999 television adaptation of Annie as well as in 2000, she was a frequent guest on the NBC's hit show Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's first Emmy was awarded for her performance in the HBO movie version of Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. Produced by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the lead the actress returned to television networks in 2003. The show she starred in was Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. Early in 2006, McDonald joined the WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year, she appeared as a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald's performance in the HBO production Lady Day At Emerson Bar Restaurant earned her four times an Emmy nomination in 2016. She also appeared in 2021 when she appeared alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale as part of The Bite, a pandemic drama that was co-produced between Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. McDonald has a brief appearance in The Good Wife, a CBS legal drama The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick from 2009 to 2018. She reprised her role (now named Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight in the role of a Paramount+ season regular. McDonald was nominated for three Critics Choice Award awards. McDonald guest-stars in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
