Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was fostered by her mother grandma and godparents. As a young child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her debut on television in a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her show in 1996.
